Feasibility Study and Facilitated Away Days - Magpie Dance

Client
Magpie Dance is a contemporary dance company for learning-disabled dance, providing contemporary dance opportunities and classes for young people and adults with learning disabilities. Magpie is based in Bromley, south London.

Objective
Over a two-year period, Counterculture carried out a feasibility study for a potential learning-disabled performance company, and facilitated staff and trustee away-days – reviewing the organisation’s progress against its strategic plan, and helping staff and trustees to refine their business plan and future strategic direction.

Actions
Stephen Escritt and Joanne Peters, a dance and disability arts specialist, researched and wrote a feasibility study; and helped Magpie to devise a plan to work towards the establishment of a performance company over a period of time. Subsequently, Stephen Escritt and Zoe McLeod facilitated two away-days. With the Magpie staff team they addressed their programme and ambitions, and continued to evaluate results against the strategic plan. With the Magpie board they re-visited the strategic plan at its mid point, assessed progress, identified key risks and opportunities, examined issues of governance and board development, and how the organisation might best fulfil its ambitions.

Results
Magpie Dance now has plans to develop a ‘company class’ as the first step towards setting up a professional company, and it has embarked on a process of board recruitment and staff and capacity expansion.
